Superfoods For A Super Body

Superfoods are natural, living, plant-based foods that do extremely wonderful things for our body when we consume these super foods in a regular superfoods diet. A great book to learn about widely accepted superfoods is SuperFoods Rx: Fourteen Foods That Will Change Your Life

If you are struggling to make good health choices, but in your heart you have a yearning to treat your body better, then these healthy foods are an amazingly effective way to get you on the fast track to turning your stressed body and unhealthy eating habits around.

However, since I am already eating right, getting some sort of exercise and have found a way to relax my mind and control my thoughts; I am super motivated to step up the quality and effectiveness of my nutritional life beyond a normal diet of great foods like broccoli, blueberries, salmon oil, etc. I am very interested in the 'new' superfoods that the raw foodists are talking about.

This page is about the 'royal' treatment of nutritional supplementation.

What are Superfoods?

I should make my definition of Superfoods clear. Broccoli and blueberries and salmon oil, etc. are certainly very healthy foods and should have a place in our regular, healthy diet. However, to me, these are "normal" super-healthy foods.

I am much more interested in the Superfoods primarily unknown to the general American public. Each of these Superfoods are also natural and pure; but have multiple, outstanding benefits for our bodies; such as longevity through cell regeneration, disease prevention, clearer thinking, higher energy, stronger stress defense and increased physical stamina.

Natural and effortless weight-loss is also a side effect of adding these Super Foods to my life. Superfoods reduce the acidity of our blood (because they are alkaline). Acid toxins from pollution and the standard American diet (read: fried foods, fast foods, processed foods and almost no fresh, living or green foods) are always being captured and stored in our fat cells as a protection mechanism. When we start adding Superfoods, our body can slowly release the toxins, and the fat they are wrapped in, into our more alkaline body (because the alkalinity makes it safe for the acid toxins to float through) and flushes them out. Voila: natural and effortless weight loss while eating more food.

I also want to mention an amazing antioxidant, called krill oil. Although this is an animal product, it is perhaps the best source of omega-3 fatty-acids, and it contains astaxanthin, a compound that is 550 times more powerful than vitamin E, and boosts so many of our body's systems, that I wrote a page on krill oil , and encourage everyone to add it to their diet.

The Superfoods List

This is my favorite list of superfoods. I got it from David Wolfe, who has a book Superfoods: The Food and Medicine of the Future that explains why these are special, how to select the best quality of each superfood and how to use them. Many of these superfoods overlap with those from other raw food gurus (like Dr. Douglas Graham). Have you heard of the mangosteen ? This fruit is officially called garcinia mangostana, and it grows on a tropical evergreen tree, believed to have originated in the Sunda Islands and the Moluccas of Indonesia.

  • Number One: Goji Berries

I've just finished reading the chapter on goji berries in David Wolfe's book, Superfoods. This is his choice for the number one superfood. I'm also chewing on a few while I write this. They look like small red raisins, but taste different. They are still chewy, but not nearly as sweet. That's probably what surprised me the most; since I'm accustomed to anything called a "berry" to be super-sweet.

This berry's flavor has grown on me, especially after learning how special it is. The fact that stands out most for me is that the goji berry has more antioxidant power than the blueberry! This super food is also known as the Wolfberry- which is the first ingredient in Isagenix's Supreme drink (which I consume everyday after work and it gets me energized enough to keep me from becoming a couch potato :)

I could go on and on about all the miraculous things goji berries do for our body, but you can research it yourself or just go online (or get to your local natural foods store) and buy a bag for yourself. The recommended daily amount is a handful of berries, so consider buying a big bag. Smaller amounts of goji berry can be sprinkled on salads, into loose tea (making tea from goji berries is especially beneficial for our body), smoothies and trail mix. "Go go goji berry!" can be my new cheer.

  • Number Two: Cacao (raw chocolate)
  • Number Three: Maca (looks like a turnip)
  • Number Four: Bee Products (honey, bee polen, royal jelly, propolis)
  • Number Five: Spirulina
  • Number Six: Blue-Green Algae
  • Number Seven: Marine Phytoplankton
  • Number Eight: Aloe Vera
  • Number Nine: Hemp Seed
  • Number Ten: Coconuts

Expanded List of Superfoods

  • Acai Berry
  • Camu Camu Berry
  • Chlorella
  • Incan Berries
  • Kelp
  • Noni
  • Yacomb

I consider Super Foods more like supplements, because I wouldn't consider eating an entire plate of Maca powder, or raw honey; the way I might eat a large serving of broccoli.

Since I have three young children, I am very interested in the most important Super Foods for children:

  • Marine Phytoplankton
  • Goji Berries
  • Coconut
  • Hemp Seed
  • Spirulina
  • Bee Pollen
  • Maca
  • Krill Oil
  • Sea Vegetables (dulce)

  • 1 Frozen Banana (makes it colder and thicker)
  • 1 Large Heaping of Raw Cacao Powder
  • A Large Spoon of Almond Butter
  • Replace the Krill Oil with Coconut Oil

I really appreciate xylitol, a natural sweetener. It actually strengthens our teeth!

A physician I know, gives it to his children right before bed!

I mix it with some cinnamon in a sugar bowl and my childrens can sprinkle it on their fruit or toast.

I also put it in smoothies, when they need extra sweetness.

My favorite xylitol use is in a gum called "Spry". It uses natural oils for flavor. This gum doesn't last as long as the products sold in the supermarkets, but it's actually good for you!
