sodium lauryl sulfate

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate Is Not For Us

Unless you have a medical condition, the most likely cause of dry, uncomfortable skin is sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). This ingredient is in almost all of the shampoos and soaps we get from the store.

Learn here about better forms of cleansers to use for a dry skin cure and how we give our body a boost to its immune system when we keep SLS away from our skin.

SLS is a cheap and strong chemical used in household detergents as well as in in soaps and shampoos to give them more bubbles and a richer lather. However, foam and bubbles have no role in actually washing us better. Consumers simply like it when they get lots of bubbles in the bath or shower.

The SLS detergent strips our body of its natural oil barrier. We can tell, because we feel squeeky clean after using it. This causes an over-drying of our body's largest organ: our skin.

Deodorant soaps are the worst, because they dry out our skin with SLS and they kill the healthy, beneficial bacteria we need on our skin.

Which Soap is Better?

We have a bunch of alternatives to using the standard bar soap. Let's look at some options:

For starters...

  • We can look for the phrase "low-sudsing" on our body cleansers and shampoos.
  • The chemical that is spelled almost exactly like SLS, sodium laureth sulfate, is actually a bit more gentle on our skin. Look for it in the product's ingredient list.
  • Try cleaning with coconut oil. It smells good, has a bit of lather and effectively cleans skin.

If we also remember to exfoliate our skin, with a sugar or salt scrub, or an invigorating dry brushing technique, we will have the healthiest and softest skin ever!

Here is an example of a wonderful shampoo:

It has no sulfates at all, many different essential oils and it's organic! If you follow this link, you will hopefully find a three-pack of this shampoo with conditioner for an excellent price. I use it every day and love it.
