It happens to all of us: we lose our temper sometimes.
The next time you can catch yourself in a fit of anger, follow these anger management steps to save yourself, save those around you, stop your anger and erase the side effects:
1. If you're dealing with an upset or disobedient child, ask the nearest able adult to supervise the child for 5 minutes.
2. Move your body out of the environment where the stress is occurring.
3. Repeat to yourself: I love you, I forgive you, I'm sorry, Thank you.
This technique is called Hooponopono. Keep saying these 4 phrases to yourself until you can think of something other than the situation that just got you upset. It must be a better feeling thought.
Try seeing yourself outside on a cool, cloudy day. Walk up a nearby hill and see yourself looking out on the landscape all around you through a sudden break in the clouds. See yourself catching your breath, actually breathe in slowly and deeply; then let it out like a loud sigh.
If you start thinking about the stressful situation again, stop immediately by filling your mind with the repetition of the four sentences again.
4. If you are responsible for a child, go back and resolve the issue with the child in a new, calm way (How? This page has some suggestions).
5. Go to sleep, or listen to some gentle music, or go work out, or go for a walk or read a good book.
That's it. It works, so try it a few times to get your own proof.
Remove Your Original Roots of Anger and Trauma
For many of us, anger has grown deep roots and we don't know how to pull out those nasty weeds.
People try all sorts of anger management techniques, but still don't find a permanent solution.
There are two techniques that have proven to be effective at getting rid of the origins of a person's anger. They are painless and easy to do with a licensed therapist.
One is called EFT (emotional freedom technique) and the other is EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing).
Here are two EFT videos (the first for adults, the second is for children).
EMDR requires a professional, but the best thing about EMDR is that once you have completed your sessions, the root of the anger or trauma is permanently gone! I can recommend a great therapist in Tampa, Florida, who could recommend a therapist in your own local area.
Your Emotions Are Very Valuable
I believe our emotions are a valuable tool meant to help us gauge how well we are staying in 'divine flow', or in the 'zone of deliberate intent'.
I believe we are meant to check on our emotional condition throughout the day and make track adjustments so that we stay in the green "all systems go" zone.
We access the "go" zone whenever our emotion registers as happy, grateful, peaceful or joyful.
When we are in this "go" zone we are directly hooked into the universal mind and the stream of love that is known as "Source" (i.e. God or any other name that refers to the the creator of the universe, etc.).
This gives us access to great power.
Whenever we are moving within this divine flow, we feel good and all our wishes, dreams and desires move closer to becoming a reality for us. This is known as manifesting.
When we check in and notice our emotions are negative, sad or angry we should understand that this is a natural red flag to alert us to the fact that we have left the "go" zone and have moved to the "low road".
When we function down on the "low road" we attract more experiences that keep us on the low road with continued experiences of feeling low, frustrated or unfulfilled.
So, pay attention to your emotional status throughout the day. As soon as you notice you are not feeling happy, thankful or at peace...do something about it.
What can you do? Anything that makes you feel happy (favorite music, favorite photo, beautiful images, relaxing smell, lovely poetry, exercise, etc.). Keep a list of your best and most effective mood changers in places you can easily get to at anytime you might need a boost back into "divine flow".
Please consider that emotions are like the weather: there are cloudy days, or weeks, but if you wait it out, you'll catch a break in the bad conditions and then you can find your way back to a better place.
By practicing the anger management techniques on this page, you raise your awareness of your natural power to control every aspect of your life.
